About the Turkish Language

Turkish language, the main member of the Turkic language family within the Altaic language group. and is rather different from languages of the Indo-European family. Turkish is spoken in Turkey, Cyprus, and other parts of Europe and the Middle East. With Gagauz, Azerbaijani, 'Azeri', Turkmen and Khorāsān Turkic, it forms the southwestern branch or Oğuz of the Turkic languages.
Modern Turkish is the descendant of Ottoman Turkish and its predecessor, so-referred to as Old Anatolian Turkish, which was added into Anatolia through the Seljuq Turks inside the overdue eleventh century CE. Old Turkish regularly absorbed a top-notch many Arabic and Persian phrases or even grammatical bureaucracy and was written in Arabic script. After the founding of the Turkish republic in 1923, the Arabic script changed through the Latin alphabet (1928). The reform of the language began and improved through the Turkish republican government. Despite disputes and opposition, the movement has done a lot to clear the Turkish vocabulary of foreign elements. An essentially new literary language emerged, and the older one was soon obsolete. A basically new literary language came out, and the older one quickly became out of date.
In terms of linguistic development, Turkish can be distinguished into four periods: Old Turkish between the 13th–16th centuries; Middle Turkish between the 17th–18th centuries; Newer Turkish in the 19th century; and Modern Turkish in the 20th century.

Status of the Turkish Language

Turkish is the official language of Turkey, with 67 million people speaking it as a mother tongue and 350,000 as a second language (Ethnologue). This is also the official language of Cyprus together with Greek. The remaining Turks live in 35 other countries in Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and America (Ethnologue). Most of these countries were from regions formerly ruled by the Ottoman Empire. The worldwide speakers of Turkish are estimated at 71 million (ethnographic).

Dialects of the Turkish Language

Turkish contains a variety of dialects. Ethnologue lists Danubian, Dinler, Edirne, Eskisehir, Gaziantep, Karamanli, Razgrad, Rumelian, Urfa. Modern Standard Turkish is predicated on the variability spoken in Istanbul, the country’s largest city.

Word Order of the Turkish Language

The word order in Turkish sentences is usually Subject-Object-Verb; however, other orderings are possible, depending on discourse-oriented considerations such as emphasis.

Vocabulary of the Turkish Language

Language reform is the most boiling political issue in Turkey. There is a fight between the followers of the local Turkish vocabulary and the followers of the modern use of the vocabulary with a large number of Western European borrowings. Religious publications regularly use various Turkish languages influenced by Arabic and Persian. Due to the rise of Islam in recent years, many Islamic words have become part of the modern Turkish language. This language is also largely borrowed from Arabic and Persian, and more recently from Western European languages.
