About Ukrainian Language

The Ukrainian falls into the eastern Slavic group of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European linguistic family; his closest family members are the Belarusian and Russian. According to Ethnologue, there are 31 million Ukrainians in Ukraine and at least 8 million in Russia and in the earlier republics of the Soviet Union, as well as in Eastern Europe, the United States, Canada, and Latin America. The total number of Ukrainian orators is estimated at around 40 million people.
Before the 14th century, the ancestors of modern Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Russians were talking variants of Old East Slavic — a language common to all three. Linguists believe it eventually split into today's Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Russian at the end of the 14th Century.
After the division of Poland by Prussia, Austria from the Habsburgs, and Russia at the end of the 18th century, it did not encourage the development of Ukrainian as a separate language. Ukraine came to be known as Little Russia and the language was called Little Russian. Publication in Ukrainian was prohibited. The widespread use of Ukrainian as a written language and in education dates back to the time after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the establishment of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) in 1922.

Status of the Ukrainian Language

Approximately 83% of its 47.5 million residents speak Ukrainian as their first language. During the seventy years of Soviet rule, Ukrainian was the main language in the USSR, but it always had to compete with the Russian and Russian attitudes of Soviet leaders. Its use ranged from reluctant tolerance to oppression. But today Ukrainian is the official language of the Republic of Ukraine. About 83% of the 47.5 million inhabitants speak Ukrainian as their mother tongue. In northern and central Ukraine, Russian is the language of the urban population, while Ukrainian is much more common in rural areas. In southern and eastern Ukraine, Russian is widespread even in rural areas, while Ukrainian is almost absent in Crimea. Both Russian and Ukrainian are spoken in Kiev today, a change from the recent past when the city mainly spoke Russian.
Since 1991, Ukraine has been working to enhance the status of Ukrainians. The education system has changed from partially Ukrainian to predominantly Ukrainian. However, there are still many obstacles to restricting the use of Russian in public administration and commerce.

Dialects of the Ukrainian Language

Some linguists split Ukrainian into three geographical dialects, which differ mainly in pronunciation, and glossary but are partially reciprocally understandable.

Northern Group Dialects of Ukrainian

This group comprises Ukrainian dialects from Eastern, Western, and Central Polissia. It is spoken in the north, where Ukraine borders Belarus, Poland, and Russia. Because of these adjacent influences, you can hear words similar to Belarusian, Polish, or Russian.

South-Western Group Dialects of Ukrainian

Western Ukraine has four main regions: Halychyna, Volyn, Zakarpattia and Bucovina, which are part of Poland, Hungary and Austria. The people here speak the Southwestern Group dialect. These Ukrainian dialects can be difficult to understand due to speakers living far enough away from the big cities and do not mix with the rest of the Ukrainian population.

South-Eastern Group Dialects of Ukrainian

This region is the largest; it is not surprising that this group of Ukrainian dialects was used as the basis for the literary language, yet there are still some particularities beyond that that made it unique. Through contact with Russians, Turks and Bulgarians, these dialects have common words with them.

Surzhyk Dialects of Ukrainian

Surzhyk is a diversified language of Ukraine, where around 15-20% of the people speak it. It adds Ukrainian grammar with a mostly Russian lexicon.
The Ukrainian language is also spoken by enormous groups of emigrants in Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Brazil. The emigrants came mainly from Galicia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy before World War I, and then, and then from Poland between the two world wars. These communities speak the Galician dialect of Ukrainian, which discloses less effect from Russian than modern Ukrainian and has borrowed many words from local languages, for example, English in Canada and the United States; Spanish in Argentina, and Portuguese in Brazil.

Ukrainian Grammar

Ukrainian is a very blended language with a grammar that is very similar to Slavic languages, mainly Russian, and Belarusian.

Word Sequence of Ukrainian

The neutral sequence of Ukrainian words is Subject-Verb-Object; however, other sequences are possible, as the inflected endings are responsible for clearly indicating grammatical relationships and roles in the sentence.

Ukrainian Writing

The history of the Ukrainian language started in 988 when the Kievan Rus converted to Christianity. Ukrainian religious content, inclusive of Bible translations, was written in Old Slavonic, the language used by missionaries whose aim was to spread Christianity among the Slavs People.
Modern Ukrainian is written using a modified version of the Cyrillic alphabet, which consists of 33 letters representing 38 phonemes, that is, sounds that create a variation in the meaning of words, plus an apostrophe. It went through many reforms in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was officially approved in 1927; it was replaced with a Soviet-approved version of the alphabet in the 1930s.

Ukrainian Vocabulary

Most of the modern Ukrainian vocabulary is dependent upon common Slavic roots shared by the other Slavic languages. The rest of the words came from languages with which he had come into contact throughout his history. These include Old Church Slavonic, Greek, Latin, Polish, Lithuanian, French, German, Russian and English.

Below are some common phrases and words in Ukrainian language.
