About The Spanish Language

Spanish (Castilian, Español) pertains to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family. Like all Romance languages, Spanish evolved from Vulgar Latin on the Iberian Peninsula that is now known as Spain and was spoken in the 16th century. It is spoken by around 399 million people as a first language and around 89.5 million people as a second language in 30 countries around the world (Ethnologue). Mexico has the largest native Spanish population in the world (103 million). The next four largest Spanish-speaking populations are in Colombia (41 million), Spain (38.6 million), Argentina (38.8 million), and the United States (34.2 million according to the 2010 census). After Chinese, English and Hindi, it is the fourth-most widely spoken language in the world.
Spanish people entitle their language español as they compare it to other national languages. They entitle it Castellano (Castilian) when they compare it to other regional languages in Spain, such as Catalan, Galician, or Basque. Other Spanish-speaking countries stand for using either of the two terms.

Spanish Language Status

Spanish is the official (or national) language of Argentina, Bolivia (with Quechua and Aymara), Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea (with French), Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay (with Guarani), Panama, Peru (with Quechua and Aymara), Puerto Rico (with English), Spain (co-official in a few areas with Catalan, Galician and Basque), Uruguay, Venezuela.
Spanish is the most widely studied as a foreign language in schools and universities of the US; Spanish has official status in the states of New Mexico and Puerto Rico; it is one of the six official working languages in the United Nations and one of twenty-three official languages in the European Union.

Spanish Language Dialects

With Spanish being spoken by so many people in so many countries, it's no wonder that so many different dialects have developed. The classic division is generally between the Spanish of Spain or the Spanish of Castilian and the Spanish of Latin America. There are variations that involve pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and intonation. Despite many regional differences, Spanish speakers from different countries can understand each other without much difficulty.

Spanish Language Grammar

Like other Romance languages, Spanish evolved from Latin, so it's grammar shares many characteristics with other Romance languages.

Spanish Language Word Order

The normal word order in propositional sentences in Spanish is Subject-Verb-Object. For questions, the normal word order for questions is Word-Verb-Subject.

Spanish Language Vocabulary

The Spanish vocabulary is based on Latin, with many borrowed words from Arabic and recently also from English. Spain's Arab connection dates back to the invasion of Spain by the Arabic-speaking Moors in AD 711. Spanish and Arabic co-existed until the Moors were expatriated in the 15th century AD. By then, thousands of Arabic words were part of Spanish. Many of them start with al, the definite article in Arabic. You will recognize some of these words as they are very similar to English words.
In some places, Spanish words with Arabic influence are preferred, such as in southern Spain and in places that were part of Muslim colonies; In the north of Spain, on the other hand, the Castilian dialect is preferred.
The Arabic influence on Spanish is mainly lexical; it is estimated that around 4,000 Spanish words have an Arabic influence: 8% of the Spanish dictionary. About 1,000 of these have Arabic roots, while the other 3,000 are derived words.
Here are some examples of such words:
adobe --- al-tob “الطوب” ‘the brick’ --- adobe
albaricoque --- al-birquuq “البرقوق” --- apricot
álgebra --- al-jebr “الجبر” ‘reunion of broken parts’ --- algebra
azafrán --- Al-zaefaran “الزعفران” --- saffron
Azúcar --- Al-sukar “السكر” --- sugar

Writing System of the Spanish Language

In the 11th century, written Spanish first came into view in notes and glosses in Latin religious texts; in the 12th century the law books were translated into Spanish; in the 13th century, Spanish prose was written; in the 15th century, the first Spanish grammars and dictionaries were published. Spanish is written using the Latin alphabet, which includes an additional letter Ñ ñ.
