About Bulgarian Language

Bulgarian falls into the South Slavic group of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. In Bulgaria, it is spoken by 5.7 million people. It is also spoken in Canada, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United States. Ethnologue estimates that the total number of Bulgarian speakers worldwide is 6.8 million.
The history of the Bulgarian language spread a number of periods:
Prehistoric Bulgarian:
The prehistoric period took place between the Slavic capture of the Eastern Balkans and the mission of St. Cyril and St. Methodius to Great Moravia in the 860s.
Old Bulgarian::
Old Bulgarian (9th to 11th centuries, which is also called Old Church Slavonic) was the language that Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius and their students used to translate the Bible and other ritual literary texts from Greek. Old Bulgarian was the first Slavic language documented in writing.
Middle Bulgarian:
Middle Bulgarian (12th to 15th centuries) was a time of fair changes when the Bulgarians lost the Old Church Slavonic case system and evolved a specific article in the form of a noun suffix.
Modern Bulgarian:
Modern Bulgarian dates from the 16th century onwards to the present day. The loss of cases in the noun, and many other linguistic changes occurred throughout the time of Central Bulgarian Time, which began with the domination of Bulgaria to the Byzantine Empire.

Status of the Bulgarian Language

Bulgarian is the official language of the Republic of Bulgaria. Bulgarian peoples constitute the chief linguistic community in the country. All features of official and social life are operated in Bulgarian. Bulgarian is the language of instruction in all fields of education and is used in all electronic and paper media.

Dialects of the Bulgarian Language

Standard Contemporary Bulgarian is the official and spoken literary dialect of Bulgarian. The Palityan is functionally understandable in standard Bulgarian. When the Bulgarian nation liberated itself from the Turks in 1878, the vernacular spoken in northeastern modern Bulgaria became the official language, as most of the major public figures came from this area and the country's temporary capital was at the centre; however, after the capital moved to Sofia in the west of the country, the original northeastern dialect underwent a series of changes to accommodate the various dialects spoken in and around the new capital, forming what is now the standard Bulgarian spoken today (Scatton, 1983).

Grammar of the Bulgarian Language

Throughout the time of the Central Bulgarian Period (12th-15th centuries), when Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire, the language experienced notable changes, including the loss of the old Church Slavonic case system, the preservation of the complex verb system based on the time from Old Church Slavonic, most of the other Slavic languages simplified the system and the development of a specific article with a suffix. It is believed that these developments can be traced back to the influence of Turkish, the official language of the Ottoman Empire, as well as other Balkan languages

Word order of the Bulgarian Language

The neutral order of the Bulgarian words is Subject-Verb-Object. However, other orders are possible. Word order is primarily determined by subject (what the old sentence or information is about) and focus (new information). Components with old information precede components with new information or those with more emphasis. This is typical of all Slavic languages.

Vocabulary of the Bulgarian Language

The modern Bulgarian words, those of up to two-thirds, are based on general Slavic sources that are shared by the other Slavic languages. The rest of the words come from other languages, mainly Greek and Latin, and to a lesser extent French and Russian. Turkish, Arabic, and Persian, which came into Bulgarian during the long period of Ottoman rule, have been replaced with their Slavic equivalents or borrowings from other languages. Today, English has been the main source of loan words.

Writing System of the Bulgarian Language

In 886 AD, Bulgaria took on the Glagolitic letters, which were developed by the Byzantine missionaries Cyril and Methodius in the 850s. The Glagolitic letters were slowly replaced in the centuries that followed by the Cyrillic letters, which were developed in the Greek letters at the beginning of the 10th century, with some letters being carried over from the earlier Glagolitic letters. In the late 18th century, it was superseded by the Russian "civil" spelling, the result of the efforts of Peter the Great, czar of Russia, to update all features of Russian society, including spelling. At the end of the 18th century, a 32-letter alphabet designed by Marin Drinov prevailed and was used until 1945, when another spelling reform produced today's Bulgarian 30-letter alphabet.
